Origin of SEFEL
SEFEL comes from an aerobic production using various by-products of both plant and animal origin such as slurry, whey from cheese factories, manures, molasses, organic matter, spoilage of fruits, vegetables, etc. depending on the needs of each crop and soil that we are going to treat.
SEFEL preparation method
SEFEL is made through a controlled aerobic process and with different proportions of nutrients patented by D. Ildefonso Acosta (2013) and technicians from the company Agrosefel (located in the Canary Islands) and Ecológicos LAS HERRERIAS (located in Seville) and endorsed by the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA), belonging to the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) of the Ministry of Sciences, Innovation and Universities of the Government of Spain.
What is SEFEL?
The SEFEL System patented by D. Ildefonso Acosta (2013) is a cultivation system that is based on the reuse of by-products from livestock and agriculture. For this purpose, aerobic organic soil structurers are developed that act as regenerators of agricultural soils, contributing microorganisms to the soils that facilitate the absorption of nutrients by the roots of the plants. The proper use for each crop of these organic soil structurers that reactivate the soils is enough to cover the growth and vegetative production needs of the plant.
How is SEFEL used?
SEFEL is used both for foliar applications and for irrigation (dripping or sprinkling).
What are the benefits of SEFEL for the soil?
Less dependence on external inputs as it is based on the reuse of agricultural and livestock by-products and forestry, among others.
Solve environmental problems by preventing these by-products from going to landfills.
The plants and fruits present a balanced development and the productions are within the standards set for the different crops, and even in many moments exceeding these standards.
It reduces the carbon footprint, going from being CO2 emitters to being carbon sinks. Reduction of the water footprint. Work carried out by the Fanegada Medio Ambiente Company located in Tenerife in collaboration with Agrosefel, with the IPNA-CSIC of Tenerife and with the Cabildo of the Island of La Palma.
The soils present good fertility, increasing the cation exchange capacity and the spontaneous appearance of beneficial microorganisms in the soils treated with this model. Works carried out with the Nertalab company located in Tenerife.
Plants develop their natural defenses and thus avoid the use of phytosanitary products. This helps to naturally combat diseases such as Verticillium in olive groves, Seca in holm oaks, Phytophthora in citrus fruits, Oidium, Míldiu or Fusarium among others.
This model can be used both in organic farming and in mixed farming (and reducing the contribution of synthetic fertilizers). This helps to develop a more social and sustainable agriculture model.
What are the benefits of SEFEL for soil improvement?
After more than 10 years of experience accumulated in the field in subtropical crops: banana (Huertas, 2015), papaya, tropical pineapple, ... in the Canary Islands and in horticultural, citrus, olive, etc ... in Andalusia, these products
they balance the soils thanks to the diversity in the populations of microorganisms and this is reflected in a well-nourished plant giving a production in excellent conditions (Hernández, 2015, 2016). The productions that are achieved are equal to or greater than those obtained with chemical synthesis fertilizers, as has been quantified in the cultivation of bananas in the Canary Islands, horticultural crops, citrus crops. The contribution of SEFEL to crops in a few months can considerably reduce salinity in the soil (normally caused by fertilizers and all kinds of inputs that we use) as has been studied in papaya in the Canary Islands (Hernández, 2016), in addition to also considerably improve the nutritional characteristics of the leaf and the organoleptic characteristics of the fruit.
